Living with Diabetes? (...)

Living with Diabetes?

Take Good Care of Your Feet

Managing diabetes is more than checking your blood sugar and changing your diet.Living with diabetes means being aware of how it can affect every aspect of your health, including your feet. Healthy feet do more than help you walk and move; they help keep out infections that maycompromise your overall health.

Less Feeling, Slower Healing

Highblood glucose from diabetes can lead to nerve damage and poor bloodflow to your feet. When nerves to the legs and feet are damaged, youmight not feel pain, heat or cold as you normally would. This lack offeeling is called diabetic neuropathy. In addition, poor blood flowslows the healing process, so it takes longer for a sore or infectionto heal. This problem is called peripheral vascular disease, and it ismade worse by smoking.

As a person with diabetes, you mayexperience loss of feeling in your feet, making it difficult to detectblisters or sores that need attention. Blisters and sores may gounnoticed and turn into ulcers or become infected, which could causeserious problems. Because your body's healing process may be slower,it's very important to seek medical attention as soon as you notice asore on your foot.

Put Your Feet First

Beingproactive about caring for your feet can make a big difference in yourquality of life, and the key is awareness every day. The following tipscan help keep your feet healthy:

â?¢ Check your feet every dayfor cuts, blisters, sores, swelling, redness or sore toenails. If youhave difficulty bending over to see your feet, use a mirror or asksomeone else to check your feet. If you see a wound or sore, try tostop further irritation to the area and see your doctor. He or she canprovide additional care if the wound is infected or requires specialattention.

â?¢ Wash your feet every dayin warm water. Make sure the water temperature is not too hot bytesting with your elbow, and always dry your feet well after washing, especially in between your toes.

â?¢ Apply lotion after washing if your feet are dry. Dry, cracked skin allows infection to get under the skin, so it helps to stay moisturized.

â?¢ File corns and calluses gently after a bath or shower. Filing too harshly or cutting at corns and calluses can harm your skin and feet.

â?¢ Keep toenails trim but not too short. Cut toenails when they are soft from washing.

â?¢ Always wear shoes or slippersâ?? even around the house â?? to protect your feet from injury. Wear sockswith shoes to prevent blisters, but don't wear tight socks that may cutoff circulation.

â?¢ Wear shoes that fit well and are supportive. Check the insides of your shoes for sharp edges or objects before putting them on.

Im trying to make the switch from junk food to eatting healthy but have no idea on how. Ive been weight training a lot and running and wanna see more results from eatting good. I have limited kitchen rescources also because I live in a dorm. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help

You can get Peanut Butter-good source of protein and lowering Cholesterol, Canned Salmon and Tuna Fish-both good Protein but Salmon is the better source and also both are high in Omega 3 Oils. Can always get packaged or whole(cheaper than packaged)chicken . Get low-fat Hellman's Mayo for the salmon and tunafish sandwiches or toss with pasta-cook spagetty any pasta noodles and mix in tuna fish or the salmon with the low fat Hellman's Mayo and season salt and pepper to taste. Can also get salmon cakes, patties etc but the cheapest is the canned apprc $2.00 for a good sized can. Since you also want.need some veggies-fresh Broccoli is cheap and can be quick cooked in micro esp if you have a fresh vegetable setting. Salmon/Tuna Fish tossed with Pasta and fesh Broccoli is a cheap but very healthy meal and also has a good Protein to Carb ratio beneficial to working out. Peanut Butter Sandwiches are also healthy esp the low-salt and are filling. Most fresh Vegetables can be cooked quickly in the microwave and buying fresh-season yourself- and are cheaper than frozen.Canned I would avoid except Corn and Beans for too much salt. All Beans are good esp Kidney-highest source of Protein in the Bean Family but eat all Pinto are healathy too. You probably have access to a library go get a book on simple healthy cooking for one esp microwave and steaming an copy the recipes, intructions that are helpful to you or go to a USED Bookstore where you can get cheap and have for a guide and a quick reference. You'll Find that cooking/preparing meals fresh is actually Cheaper than fast food and of course, much healthier Go to www.chef's.com to guide to microwave meals and more-did a search on Healthy quick meals and found many sites-doing a search be well worth your time for can download/copy recipes etc

Becoming a work at home business owner means you will need to make priority choices about many things – especially when it comes to time management. (...)

Becoming a work at home business owner means you will need to make priority choices about many things – especially when it comes to time management. One of the easiest things to do is to fall into a routine where you take care of your family, the business, your home and forget about yourself. Just because suddenly you feel you need every waking moment (and some sleeping ones) to keep your "to do" list under control, you can't ignore your body or you'll find that your energy levels will start to decrease and you won't be able to put as much effort into getting your work at home business off the ground as you thought you would be able to.

There are three main areas of a healthy living lifestyle that are easy to ignore when first getting started in the work at home business arena, namely nutrition, exercise and sleep. They are also the three main healthy living issues that need to be balanced in order to keep your body functioning properly, and ignoring any (or worse, all) of them will have a negative effect on your health. The problem is that they all take time out of what is going to be an already over-filled day so you need to find someway to incorporate them into what you're doing so that you eliminate the need to find extra time to fit them in.

The first thing you need to do is to learn what your body needs in order to function at its optimum. What does it need by way of nutrition, how much sleep does it need to keep you sharp, and what exercise is recommended for someone of your age and fitness ability? One way of helping with nutrition is to buy plenty of healthy snacks, such as fruit and raw vegetable sticks (such as celery and carrots). Plan your meals a week in advance so that you know each day what you need to do for preparation for the next day's menu – and stick to it. Schedule your day so that there are three things that are rigid – meal preparation time, 15-30 minutes of exercise (even if that's a power walk to the store for an errand or to the school to pick up children), and a fixed bed time that is set in stone – regardless what deadlines and TV specials appear on your horizon!

By scheduling these three things into your work at home business life from the very beginning, you won't get used to the fast food, 3 am bedtime and zero exercise – and consequently zero energy – circle that many work at home business people initially find themselves in. Once your new lifestyle of caring for family, home, business and self becomes second nature, you won't need to actually write these things in your day planner – but until that time, make sure that every week you conscientiously make the effort to write them down at set times, and that you make sure that you "turn up" for each of the appointments on the scheduled time.

As a work at home business owner, the last thing you need to be is sick. Ensure that you don't threaten your health by ignoring the basic essential components your body needs to function well. Remember that if you threaten your body's immunity and capacity to cope with daily living – you are also threatening your ability to build and run a successful work at home business!

Your hair is one of the most obvious first impressions people will get when they see you, simply because it complements all of your other features.

Your hands also tell a story about your life and therefore it is important to take care of these features as well. It is common to note that people often don't consider that their hair and nails have an effect on their everyday lives.

That is to say, when you have a bad hair day it can either make or break your day. That is why it is important to have healthy hair and nails.

It is not a myth used by shampoo ads; it is the reality and a harmonious aspect of being healthy. This is due to the fact that overall health means just that, overall health, not just one component of being "healthy".

Natural health products are wonderful products to use. With the natural ingredients they will nourish and feed your hair, without unwanted side-effects that many chemical products create. These natural health products encompass a number of shampoos and conditioners.

If you have dry hair, there are natural products that will help you solve the problem. Remember that the weather also has an effect on your hair. If your hair sustains a whole lot of damage, you will need to rectify if before it gets worse.

There are also natural health products you can use on your hands. These will enable you to have strong healthy nails by exfoliating dead cells and fortifying living cells with minerals.

A woman's worst enemy is brittle hair and nails. That is why these naturally formulated products are here to help. The key ingredients are mixed together in a way that will ensure that all your hair and nails needs are met.

Besides products that are used externally, there are many natural supplements that are taken internally as well. Any health food store can recommend products which will work in tandem with the external products to produce amazing results on both your hair and nails.

So maybe you should go out and find those naturally formulated health products that will work for you.

Do some research. Find out what your options are and how you can use these special products to benefit you.

At least you will know that you are giving yourself the best care there is by using naturally healthy products.

Every second American is overweight. Indeed 1 out of every four Americans is obese. (...)

Every second American is overweight. Indeed 1 out of every four Americans is obese. And it is universally known that obesity is a direct invitation to various diseases including hypertension, diabetes, stress and depression.

According to one study at least 65 % of these obese people have tried one or the other methods of weight loss in a single year. Wherein, about 23 % of these people succeeded in their weight loss endeavor.

Reading these mis-adventurous statistics of the Americans, it can well be said that most of these people are disillusioned with the available over the counter medications, prescription medications and the so called instant weight loss programs. People, in their search for weight loss pills, methods and product usually forgo the basics underlying this whole concept of weight loss. They look for quick weight loss methods, wherein they should primarily hunt for healthy and safe weight loss methods.

Let's peep into the various aspects of healthy and safe weight loss and find out what an ideal weight loss program should be like.

Well, adopting any weight loss technique is like setting up of the process of internal combustion of the additional luggage that you are carrying within in the form of toxic materials and additional flesh. It is initiating the private revolution to become a normal human being from the over sized one. It is atoning for your past eating sins. It is a careful understanding of your internal mechanism and the process of its regular maintenance.

You can adopt various methods to reduce weight. But what is most important for you is to adopt the one that is safe and conducive to your body mechanism. A successful weight loss method may include low crab diet, weight loss pills, weight loss supplements and many other weight loss programs.

But health and wellness should assume the prime slot in any of the techniques employed for the weight loss. What you eat makes your body, therefore for the cause of weight loss switch over to healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, carbohydrates and those items containing lots of fiber. Make it a rule: Unhealthy eating is an ugly habit!

You have to understand the state of your health in the proper perspective and make a suitable program depending upon your own circumstances. Remember what is good for your friend may not be as good for you in this weight loss spree. So always consult a professional dietician or a doctor before you start your weight loss program. For, your agenda is not quick weight loss, but the healthy weight loss!

Here is a list of things you can adopt for healthy weight loss.

Take two spoonfuls of honey in lukewarm water mixed with 1 spoon of lemon juice on the empty stomach. You will be surprised to experience the beneficial results of this discipline, within a fortnight.

Not only weight loss, several other health benefits are bound to accrue.

As for the breakfast, give up all junk food and take the juice of any seasonal vegetable like carrot or cucumber. Fruits and vegetables are nothing but the herbs provided to you by the nature.

Next, regular use of the fresh, tender coconut water is definitely going to help you in your weight loss vow. This again, you need to take on the empty stomach, in the morning. You can take this leaving half an hours gap, after you take your honey dose.

Diet pills and food supplements which are depended upon the herbal extracts and natural ingredients have decided advantage in the weight loss program. This is a step in the right direction. But you need not endlessly depend upon these products.

All in all, healthy living, the good food habits should evolve in a way that would help the weight loss program in the long run.

Stay Healthy at Any Age
Some health advice stands the test of time â?? (...)

check out the Living Healthy with Diabetes swicki at eurekster.com

Stay Healthy at Any Age

Some health advice stands the test of time â?? donâ??t smoke, eat right and exercise apply to people of all ages. But some health care priorities and guidelines change as we grow older. Screening tests, nutritional recommendations and exercise requirements vary based on your age and overall health, so itâ??s important to talk to your doctor about what is right for you. The following guidelines may help steer the conversation.

In the Beginning

Individuals in their 20s and 30s have their whole lives in front of them, and there is no better time to ensure that it is a healthy one.

Recommended screenings. Your annual physical may move quickly, as the recommended tests are minimal. Your doctor may conduct a complete lipid profile, which indicates your cholesterol level, every five years. Women should have an annual Pap test to detect cervical cancer or precancerous cells beginning three years after their first sexual activity or by age 21.

Exercise guidelines. Try to fit at least five sessions of aerobic exercise, such as jogging, walking or biking, into your weekly routine, as well as one session of strength training. Stretch for at least 10 minutes every other day, especially after your aerobic activity.

Dietary recommendations. The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends limiting your caloric intake to 2,000 calories per day, but this number varies based on your activity level (see chart). In general, to maintain your weight, the calories you expend should match the calories you consume. Itâ??s also important to make sure your food choices contain the recommended nutrients, such as at least 1,000 mg of calcium per day. Women of childbearing age may need to increase their consumption of iron and folic acid.

In the Middle Years

As you enter your 40s and move into your 50s, many health guidelines stay the same. But there are a few notable differences.

Recommended screenings. Beginning at age 45, you may receive a fasting-glucose test every three years to measure your risk of diabetes. At age 50, your doctor may recommend a colonoscopy every 10 years to help detect colon cancer. Men may start to screen for prostate cancer with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test every one to two years at age 50, although men with a higher risk may want to start at 45. Women should undergo mammograms every one to two years beginning at age 40, and baseline bone-densitometry testing soon after menopause.

Exercise guidelines. Aerobic exercise remains a top priority, although you may want to minimize high-impact activities. Strength training becomes even more important, and experts suggest scheduling two or three sessions per week.

Dietary recommendations. By age 50, many adults canâ??t absorb naturally occurring vitamin B12 as well as their younger counterparts, so be sure to eat foods fortified with vitamin B12 and consider taking supplements to ensure you receive the recommended 2.4 micrograms per day. Now is also the time to increase calcium consumption to 1,200 mg for men and 1,500 mg for postmenopausal women.

Living Longer and Stronger

As life spans lengthen, the very definition of aging changes. Treatments once considered too traumatic for older adults, such as chemotherapy and coronary bypass surgery, have in many cases been proven safe and effective. Chronic conditions once regarded as noncritical in the older years, such as high cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure levels, are now being actively controlled with medications. Understanding how your bodyâ??s needs change can help ensure you receive age-appropriate care.

Recommended screenings. Many of the tests youâ??ve grown accustomed to may no longer be necessary during your doctor visits. Women who have never had an abnormal Pap test can discontinue the screening after age 65. Many experts advise stopping prostate cancer screening in men after age 75. But bone density testing becomes more important. Women should receive bone densitometry once every two to three years, while a single test in men is generally sufficient. In addition, your doctor may begin checking your feet for peripheral artery disease, and suggest visiting an ophthalmologist every one to two years to test for macular degeneration, glaucoma and other age-related eye problems.

Exercise guidelines. Continue to include three to four sessions of low-impact aerobic activity per week. Limit strength training to two times per week to allow your muscles to recover in between sessions, and consider reducing the resistance and increasing the repetitions. You may also want to add balance exercises to your stretching routine.

Dietary recommendations. Medications and other factors may begin to diminish your sense of taste and smell, which can affect your appetite. Unless you are overweight, you may need to take special care to include sufficient calories â?? and the proper vitamins and nutrients â?? in your diet. By age 65, it is advisable that both men and women consume at least 1,500 mg of calcium per day.

In today's world it is difficult to ignore all of the pressure that the media puts on us to look our best. With all of the airbrushing and photoshopping, no one looks real anymore and the effects of this more-perfect-than-human advertising are even showing themselves in men!

Most of us do not have a team of stylists helping us do our hair and makeup in the morning. Most of us have to rely upon a reasonably priced and easy to do beauty routine. We buy what we can afford, what does not make us break out, and we do our best. I think that there are only a few areas that must get attention and the most important is your skin.

Having healthy skin tells others that you take care of yourself. This is very attractive to every type of person. No one wants to be with someone who does not know how to wash their face or someone that simply refuses to do so. Healthy skin can be difficult for some people to obtain but dedication usually is the key.

It is not impossible to have great looking, healthy skin. Washing everyday with an effective yet mild soap is very important. There are many soaps out there that swear they will give you younger looking, healthy skin but they mostly irritate and damage the skin. Be wary of any products that have laundry lists of chemicals. Your skin is a living thing and having healthy skin usually requires that you feed it healthy things.

Drinking lots of water goes a long way when it comes to having healthy skin. Water helps to flush out the pores and leave your skin softer and brighter. Working out on at least a semi-regular schedule will also help your skin clear itself of dirt and impurities. The sweat moves dirt and oil out of the pores and can help cut down on breakouts.

Your diet can affect your skin a great deal. Speak with your dermatologist or regular doctor about which foods you may want to avoid in order to keep your skin looking and feeling great. Don't give up no matter what. All of us at one point or another had to deal with breakouts and horrible-looking skin. For the vast majority of us, it went away on its own once we reached a certain age. You may have to work on it or do a bit of waiting, but just know that it will get better.

On television the word "junk food" appears often but suggestions of healthy nurishment are rare. What is your suggestion ?

Hummous is the best thing on earth. Put a (drained) can of chickpeas into a blender, add 2-3 tablespoons of OLIVE oil, one clove chopped garlic, and blend until pureed, adding water as you go if it gets to thick.
Then you can dip pieces of WHOLEWEAT pitta bread, sliced carrots or celery in it and it tastes fantastic.
Add garam masala, lemon juice, black pepper, and/or coriander leaves to the hummous for extra flavour.

Another good food is basmati rice. It has a lower GI rating so you don't get hungry right after eating it. Rice is really low in calories, so a meal like chilli or curry that you can eat with rice can be very healthy. To make an easy chilli, chop up your favourite vegetables and fry in a little olive oil. Add chilli powder (or fresh chopped chillies if you're feeling brave), a can of tomatoes (or fresh chopped tomatoes) and a can of red kidney/chilli beans (look out for the ones that come already in chilli sauce). Simmer for about 15 minutes and serve with a dollop of zero fat sour creme (craime fraiche) or cottage cheese.
To make an easy curry, you could do the same thing but with a balti powder, or to be a bit different, fry the vegetables in a little sunflower oil, add some garam masala powder or korma powder. Fry it until they are really well done, then, keeping the pan on the heat, add enough BOILING water to cover the vegetables. Let it reduce down, then spoon in some zero fat sour creme and stir until you have a smooth creamy sauce. It tastes like it is bad for you, but it's not!

Also, I don't believe in ever cutting out a food group. People who don't eat carbohydrates must be so bored!
